Holi – The festival of Colors in India
Holi – The festival of Colors in India
Holi is one of the biggest festival celebrated in India and worldwide by Hindu peoples. It is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun which is the month of March. This time it occurs in the last day of Feb, 10.
There are two days when this colorful festival is celebrated, one is the Dulhandi / Dulhendi when people play with colors and the day before Dulhandi i.e. Holika Dahan, also called Chhoti Holi when people gather at important crossroads and light huge bonfires.
Preparations –
The festival is celebrated with the Abeer and Gulal, in all possible colours. People used to color each other with Gulal to show friendship, love and affection.
Ladies used to make great delicious dishes for the day. The main dishes are gujiya, mathri and papri for the family and also for the relatives who comes to home to celebrate the festival.
Story behind the Festival
There are many associated stories behind the Holi festival. Major one is the story of bhakt Prahlad who was the son of King Hiranyakashyap who demanded everybody in his kingdom to worship him but his own son, Prahlad was a big devotee of Lord Vishnu. Because of this, Hiranyakashyap decided to kill his own son. He asked his sister Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap as Holika had a boon which made he immune to fire. But Prahlad was saved by Lord and evil minded Holika was burnt to ashes, for her boon worked only when she entered the fire alone.
Since that time, people light a bonfire, called Holika on the eve of Holi festival and celebrate the victory of good over evil and also the triumph of devotion to god.
Some also celebrate the death of evil minded Pootana. The ogress tried to Lord Krishna as an infant by feeding it poisonous milk while executing the plan of Kansa, Krishna’s uncle. But, Krishna sucked her blood and brought her end. Some who view the origin of festivals from seasonal cycles believe that Pootana represents winter and her death the cessation and end of winter.
So, lets enjoy it with full heart.
Happy Holi to all our readers.
